Local Solicitor’s firm, John McKee & Son, are putting their best foot forward and running the Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon Relay for Transplant Sport UK. Orla Smyth, the face of the marathon for Transplant Sport UK, worked with the firm at the time when she received her first and sadly unsuccessful transplant, she has since gone on to lead an active and healthy life after a second successful transplant and praises her former colleagues for their continued support after all these years;

‘I am really grateful for the support that I received from them at what was a very difficult time and I’m  really happy to see that despite the fact I no longer work there, that they have continued to recognise the desperate need for Organs in Northern Ireland. By running the marathon they are cementing their belief in the benefits of transplantation, which they have personally experienced through seeing the difference a transplant has made to my life. Despite my illness, John McKee & Son Solicitors ensured that I went on to become a fully qualified solicitor and I am indebted to them for that.’

Funds raised from the marathon will go towards helping to raise awareness for the charity and the desperate need for organ donors and will also, in part help to fund the charities flagship event, the Westfield Health British Transplant Games which will be held in Belfast in August.

The Westfield Health British Transplant Games will see around 800 transplant athletes visit Belfast from across the UK to take part in the four day event. Athletes visiting will be of all abilities and aged between two and eighty-two! The event exists to encourage people who have received a transplant to lead a healthy and active life while encouraging others to sign onto the Organ Donor Register.

In Northern Ireland there are 300 people currently on the waiting list for a transplant, by signing the register and discussing your wishes with your family you can help save lives today.
