Avril joined John McKee & Son in 1990 as a trainee and became a partner in 1996. She is currently the firm's managing partner.
Working closely with Lex Ross, they have built, developed and expanded the firm's commercial practice so that the firm has been consistently ranked in the top tier for Banking and Finance by Chambers and the Legal 500 for a number of years, with these publications also recognising the firm in the corporate field as well.
Avril is recognised as a leader in her field by both the Legal 500 and Chambers. She has particular expertise advising banks on M&A, property finance, business finance, and PFI and PPP transactions. Chambers recently stated that Avril has "great expertise in complicated deals and has been crucial in guiding clients through complex structures." She "clearly belongs in the top tier - her detail is first class and she is very dedicated."
Avril acts for all of the major banks in Northern Ireland including AIB Group (UK) plc, Anglo Irish Bank Corporation plc, Bank of Ireland and Ulster Bank Limited. She is also instructed by a number of international lenders notably RBS, Bank of Scotland, Natwest and Austrian Bank Raiffeisen Zentralbank in all secured lending matters, and recently acted for an Asia-Pacific Club of Banks as UK Counsel.
Avril tutors and lectures on both the Company Law and the Advanced Company Law Course at the Institute of Professional Legal Studies.
Outside of work, Avril sits on the Board of Governors of her local Grammar School and enjoys relaxing with her husband and children at the family farm.
